2.1: General:

National Center for Biotechnology Information or NCBI is the largest and mostly used gateway to Bioinformatics and one of the world’s premier Web sites for biomedical and bioinformatics research.  It was established in 1988 as a national resource for molecular biology information and creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data, and disseminates biomedical information - all for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease. NCBI staff with advanced training in molecular biology builds the database from sequences submitted by individual laboratories and by data exchange with the international nucleotide sequence databases, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the DNA Database of Japan (DDBJ). Arrangements with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office enable the incorporation of patented sequence data. This web site offers a wide range of databases and searches via Web-based interactive forms, including GenBank, PubMed, BLAST, genome biology resources and databases and many other resources. Moreover, it provides with various other databases like Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), the Molecular Modeling Database (MMDB) of 3D protein structures, the Unique Human Gene Sequence Collection (UniGene), a Gene Map of the Human Genome, the Taxonomy Browser, and the Cancer Genome Anatomy Project (CGAP), in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute. These resources are integrated by Enterz, a search and retrieval system that also include cross-referenced information. Submission to the GenBank database can be made here.
